E-insolvency can provide advice to ensure people can keep up debt repayments in case of inability to work due to injury by calling 0800 074 6918 or completing the contact form on the left side of the page.

Injury is damage or harm caused to the structure or function of the body caused by an outside agent or force, which may be physical or chemical. Injury may also refer to injured feelings or reputation rather than injuries to the body. A severe and perhaps life-threatening injury is called a physical trauma arising from Injury.

Thousands of injury victims face lives of debt and social exclusion because they do not receive enough income to cover their monthly debt payments.

The advice team at E-insolvency says as many as 60,000 people a year contact the service with debt arising from injury after discharge from hospital. Although most make a good recovery from their physical symptoms, many receive no vocational help at all. Apart from the emotional misery - the cost to the debt problems can be an enormous strain.

More than half of debt arising from injury (58%) occur in road traffic accidents. One in five are caused by falls, and a further 15% by assaults.

Nine out of 10 people with debt arising from injury suffer psychological impairment, three-quarters intellectual impairment and 44% pain and headaches.

The social policy team at E-insolvency, feel a combination of factors stopped injury victims holding down work and so they get into debt.

People with injuries may suffer emotional problems such as anxiety and depression, and sometimes they can become very dependent on others. They can lose their self-confidence and feel unable to go back to work.

Unable to hold down work and so debts build up

Some people go back to work, but were unable to hold a job down.

Rehabilitation tends to concentrate on physical improvement, and some people are not aware of their cognitive impairments such as problems with memory and planning. They go back to work, but are not able to perform the job as they used to, and employers become unhappy.

What is a personal injury?

Any injury you suffer is of course 'personal', but you can claim compensation only if a person, company or some other organisation is at least partly to blame for your injuries. The person or organisation must have been careless about the way something was:

  • done;
  • not done, when it should have been; or
  • made or repaired.

The person or organisation that was careless ('negligent') may have to pay you compensation for your injuries.

A personal injury can happen, for example:

  • at work;
  • in a road accident;
  • because of a faulty product;
  • because of a mistake during medical treatment ; or
  • because you tripped on a paving stone or slipped on a wet floor in a shop.

An injury may be psychological as well as physical, so you may be able to get compensation for distress or upset after an accident as well as for the physical injury.

The aim of E-insolvency is to help as many people who are in debt due to injury. If you or a member of your family is in debt arising from personal injury please call 0800 074 6918 or complete the form on the left hand side of the page.
